Shirley (Gelman) Kabat, 86, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, NJ. Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, met her future husband Joel at age 9 in grade school and was a graduate of East Side High School. Shirley also lived in Clifton, NJ before moving to Somerset, NJ in 2005.
Shirley attended secretarial school. She was a legal secretary with New & New Attorneys at Law in Bloomfield for many years.
Shirley belonged to Hadassah and the Sisterhood through the Clifton Jewish Center. She was a member of the Yiddish Club, was a Mahjong player, however her life was centered around family.
She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Shirley was known to her family as "Bubbie". Predeceased by her parents Max and Minnie (Miller) Gelman and all of her siblings, Shirley leaves her daughter Marla and son-in-law Rich Zirin and her son Dr. Alan Kabat and his wife Bonnie, her grandchildren Rebekah Mally, Judah Loewnenstein, Mikaela Zirin Hunter Kabat and Austin Kabat, her great grandchildren Amitai and Yael Mally and Yoel and Abby Loewenstein.
Funeral service will be held at the Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth, South Third and Benner Streets, Highland Park at 12 pm on Sunday, August 12, 2018. Interment will follow at East Ridgelawn Cemetery-Menorah Section, Clifton, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
