Mariel Polanco

March 17, 1972 — December 5, 2020

Mariel was born on March 17, 1972 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to Carlos Manuel Polanco and Mariana Sanchez. She is survived by her beloved son Joel Cruz from her first husband Orlando Cruz; her mother Mariana Sanchez, her brother Yomare Polanco, her second husband Jose Cross, her siblings by her father Maritza, Altagracia, Marcial, and Pura; her nephews Carlos, Johansy, Jordan and Emile, her lovely nieces Wendy, Alionka, Jomarie, and Genevieve, her uncles Camilo and Jesus Maria, her aunts Maria and Toñita, and many great cousins and good friends.

Mariel completed her elementary and high school education at the catholic school “Colegio Virgen de la Altagracia” in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After that, she enrolled at the University Pedro Henriquez Ureña also in Santo Domingo and completed the Computer Science Educational Program. When Mariel first came to the United State of America in July 1992, she became a Computer Analyst and then a Manager at various logistic companies in New Jersey.

Mariel had always loved education and children and decided to dedicate her life to educating the future generation. She became a teacher after completing a bachelor’s degree at Kean University and a master’s degree in Education at Thomas Edison State University. As an educator, she first worked at Roosevelt Elementary School in New Brunswick, NJ and then spent the last decade at Emerson Elementary School in Plainfield, NJ. As an educator, Mariel was involved with the families and the communities of her students. She was twice awarded Teacher of the Year, and was loved by her students, the parents of her students, school staff, and the school districts where she worked.

Mariel was known for her ability to give unconditional love to everyone. Her smile, good mood, and talent to deal with people leaves us with a legacy to be happy no matter what. She left this world peacefully with the Father, The Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We all love you so much Mariel Polanco Sanchez, and will always love you.
