Jonathan David Zamick

November 13, 1970 — December 31, 2020

Jonathan David Zamick, born November 13, 1970, passed away from natural causes in Oakland, California, on December 31, 2020 at the age of 50. Jonathan grew up in New Jersey. He graduated as a National Merit Scholar from Highland Park High School, and he studied computer science and psychology at Connecticut Wesleyan and Rutgers Universities, completing his degree at Rutgers. Jonathan worked in the gaming industry and as an entrepreneur, his most recent engagement being as a principal in the companies Selfie Cookie and Foto Donut. He made many friends throughout his career and also through myriad hobbies and outside interests. Jonathan was a generous, eclectic, gifted man whose memory is a blessing to everyone who knew him.

Jonathan loved nature, travel, games, people, and food. Jonathan was very committed to the concept of joyful play and playing was very important in his life. He was a game developer, becoming CEO of Unplugged Games, a company that created games for cell phones in the early 2000’s. . He also played Dungeons and Dragons, and many other interactive games and continued to be part of the gaming community. He loved animals: not just dogs and cats, but also insects and marine animals. An avid bee-keeper, Jonathan communed with “the girls” in only a veil, shorts and flip- flops. He was rarely stung. He was a volunteer for the Alameda County Beekeepers Association, where he contributed his intellect and business acumen to restructuring their swarm response phone hotline, working to relocate bees safely and to answer any questions about their care. Jonathan delighted in performing swarm rescues and facilitating the safe rehoming of many bee colonies. Jonathan also volunteered at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA, helping to care for rescued seals and sea lions. He loved to cook, especially when the process involved science, technology, and complicated machinery. He fed multitudes of friends the meats that he prepared using his sous vide machine and smoker, and he mastered home brewing. Jonathan generously shared not only his home-made beer and home-smoked brisket, but also his knowledge and expertise with all who wished to learn. He traveled the world extensively; his ports of call included Israel, Jordan, Europe, Iceland, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Sweden. Most of all, Jonathan was a loving and beloved son and brother. He is survived by his parents, Mona and Larry Zamick, and his sister Lynn Zamick.

Services were held on Wednesday January 6th, 2021 at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.
