Mrs. Helen Brenner Senzel

December 28, 1925 — June 5, 2022

We regret to inform family and friends that our Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and cherished friend, Helen (Brenner, Miller, Schwartz) Senzel passed away in the early hours of this morning at the Gardens at Monroe in Monroe Township, NJ.

Helen lived a long and full, meaningful and rich life, surrounded by her sisters and their husbands, her sons and their wives, her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her nephews and neices, cousins and large extended family. Every day her life was filled with the joy of music, which emanated so beautifully from the depths of her soul. She will be missed by so many.

Helen is survived by her children, Rabbi Bennett and Joan Goldberg Miller of Monroe Township, NJ; Andrew Schwartz and Vicki Moliver Schwartz of Sydney Australia; and Sue-Ellen Johnson (Ronald of blessed memory) of Suffern, NY. She was predeceased by each of her husbands: Eli Miller, Erving Schwartz, and Harold Senzel. And also predeceased by her four devoted sisters: Sarah (Billie) Vick, Betty Verb, Pearl Miller, and Marion Feinberg.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rabbi Ellie Miller, Carrie Nussbaum (Jed), Jacob Schwartz (Carolyn), Rabbi Ari Schwartz (Becky), Rabbi Zachary Schwartz (Rachel), Michelle Chapin (Thomas) and Emy Zener (Max), and sixteen great grandchildren.

Helen spent nearly all of her life living in Rochester, NY. She graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School. She was a founding member of Temple Emanu-El of Irondequoit, NY, and long time member of Temple B’rith Kodesh of Brighton, NY. She was active in many of the activities of her Temples and a long time member of the choir of each synagogue.

Together, with her sisters Marion and Betty, she formed “The Brenner Sisters,” professionally singing in night clubs, at civic organizations, weddings and B’nai mitzvah receptions. She excelled as a “full charge” bookkeeper at Harry Levin Furriers, Flanagan Furniture, and George A. Robinson.

She loved gardening and cooking, baking and good friends. Most of all she will always be remembered for her saying “As long as you have music in your life you are never alone.”

A private family funeral will be observed on Tuesday, June 7, at 10AM at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.

Friends and family wishing to make donations in Helen’s memory are invited to do so to the Helen Senzel Music Fund at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, New Brunswick NJ.
